- Description:
- The EPOCH (EROS-2 periodic variable star classification using machine learning) project aims to detect periodic variable stars in the EROS-2 light curve database. In order to classify these variables, we first build a training set by compiling known variables in the Large Magellanic Could area from the OGLE and MACHO surveys. We crossmatch these variables with the EROS-2 sources and extract 22 variability features from 28,392 light curves of the corresponding EROS-2 sources. We then use Random Forests to classify the EROS-2 sources in the training set. We design the model to separate not only Delta Scuti stars, RR Lyraes, Cepheids, eclipsing binaries and long-period variables, the "superclasses", but also their subclasses, such as RRab, RRc, RRd and RRe for RR Lyraes, and similarly for the other variable types. We apply the trained model to the entire EROS-2 LMC database containing about 29 million sources and find 117,234 periodic variable candidates. Out of these 117,234 periodic variables, 55,285 have not been discovered by either OGLE or MACHO variability studies. This set comprises 1906 Delta Scuti stars, 6,607 RR Lyraes, 638 Cepheids, 178 Type II Cepheids, 34,562 eclipsing binaries and 11,394 long-period variables.

- EROS-2 Long Period Variables in LMC
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/536/A60
- Date:

- Description:
- The EROS-2 survey has produced a database of millions of time series from stars monitored for more than six years, allowing us to classify some of their sources into different variable star types. Among the so-called, long period variables (LPVs), which are known to follow particular sequences in the period-luminosity diagram, we find long secondary period variables whose variability origin remains a matter of debate. We analyze data for the 856864 variable stars that have been discovered in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) that are present in the EROS-2 database, to detect, classify, and characterize LPVs.

- FF Aql BV light curves
- Short Name:

- Description:
- Photographic plates of the Harvard Observatory stacks have been used to obtain 1261 brightness estimates for the low-amplitude Cepheid FF Aql (P=4.47 days). Combined with published visual, photoelectric, and CCD observations, these data enable the construction of an O-C diagram spanning 122 years. The resulting O-C diagram is parabola-shaped, enabling the determination of quadratic brightness elements for the first time. The evolutionary rate of increase of the period, dP/dt=0.072+/-0.011s/year, is in agreement with theoretical computations for the third crossing of the instability strip. The available data, reduced using the technique of by Eddington and Plakidis, reveal the presence of small, random period fluctuations, {epsilon}=0.0061d+/-0.0044d, that do not distort the evolutionary trend of the O-C residuals.

- Follow-up photometry & spectroscopy of PTF14jg
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/874/82
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We report the outbursting source PTF 14jg, which, prior to the onset of its late 2013 eruption, was a faint, unstudied, and virtually uncataloged star. The salient features of the PTF 14jg outburst are (i) projected location near the W4 HII region and radial velocity consistent with physical association; (ii) a light curve that underwent an ~6-7mag optical (R-band) through mid-infrared (L-band) brightening on a timescale of a few months, peaked and then faded by ~3mag, but plateaued still >3.5mag above quiescence by ~8 months post-peak, lasting to at least 4yr after eruption; (iii) strong outflow signatures with velocities reaching -530km/s; (iv) a low-gravity and broad (~100-150km/s FWHM) optical absorption-line spectrum that systematically changes its spectral type with wavelength; (v) lithium; and (vi) ultraviolet and infrared excess. We tentatively identify the outburst as exhibiting characteristics of a young star FU Ori event. However, the burst would be unusually hot, with an absorption spectrum exhibiting high-excitation (~11000-15000K) lines in the optical and no evidence of CO in the near-infrared, in addition to exhibiting an unusual light curve. We thus also consider alternative scenarios-including various forms of novae, nuclear-burning instabilities, massive star events, and mergers-finding them all inferior to the atypically hot FU Ori star classification. The source eventually may be interpreted as a new category of young star outburst with a larger amplitude and shorter rise time than most FU Ori-like events.

- Gaia SPSS variability monitoring

- Description:
- We present the results of the short-term constancy monitoring of candidate Gaia Spectrophotometric Standard Stars (SPSS). We obtained time series of typically 1.24 hour - with sampling periods from 1-3 min to a few hours, depending on the case - to monitor the constancy of our candidate SPSS down to 10mmag, as required for the calibration of Gaia photometric data. We monitored 162 out of a total of 212 SPSS candidates. The observing campaign started in 2006 and finished in 2015, using 143 observing nights on nine different instruments covering both hemispheres. Using differential photometry techniques, we built light curves with a typical precision of 4 mmag, depending on the data quality. As a result of our constancy assessment, 150 SPSS candidates were validated against short term variability, and only 12 were rejected because of variability including some widely used flux standards such as BD+174708, SA 105-448, 1740346, and HD 37725.

- Galactic and LMC Cepheids Fourier parameters

- Description:
- We present a light-curve analysis of fundamental-mode Galactic and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids based on the Fourier decomposition technique. We have compiled light-curve data for Galactic and LMC Cepheids in optical (VI), near-infrared (JHKs) and mid-infrared (3.6 and 4.5{mu}m) bands from the literature and determined the variation of their Fourier parameters as a function of period and wavelength. We observed a decrease in Fourier amplitude parameters and an increase in Fourier phase parameters with increasing wavelengths at a given period. We also found a decrease in the skewness and acuteness parameters as a function of wavelength at a fixed period. We applied a binning method to analyse the progression of the mean Fourier parameters with period and wavelength. We found that for periods longer than about 20d, the values of the Fourier amplitude parameters increase sharply for shorter wavelengths as compared to wavelengths longer than the J band. We observed the variation of the Hertzsprung progression with wavelength. The central period of the Hertzsprung progression was found to increase with wavelength in the case of the Fourier amplitude parameters and decrease with increasing wavelength in the case of phase parameters. We also observed a small variation of the central period of the progression between the Galaxy and LMC, presumably related to metallicity effects. These results will provide useful constraints for stellar pulsation codes that incorporate stellar atmosphere models to produce Cepheid light curves in various bands.

- Description:
- We report a new version of the catalogue of distances and light-curve parameters for Galactic classical Cepheids. The catalogue lists amplitudes, magnitudes at maximum light, and intensity means for 455 stars in BVRI filters of the Johnson system and (RI)_C_ filters of the Cron-Cousins system. The distances are based on our new multicolour set of Period/Luminosity relations and on our Cepheid-based solution for interstellar extinction law parameters and are referred to an LMC distance modulus of 18.25.

- GALEX Time Domain Survey I. UV variable sources
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/766/60
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the selection and classification of over a thousand ultraviolet (UV) variable sources discovered in ~40deg^2^ of GALEX Time Domain Survey (TDS) NUV images observed with a cadence of 2 days and a baseline of observations of ~3 years. The GALEX TDS fields were designed to be in spatial and temporal coordination with the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey, which provides deep optical imaging and simultaneous optical transient detections via image differencing. We characterize the GALEX photometric errors empirically as a function of mean magnitude, and select sources that vary at the 5{sigma} level in at least one epoch. We measure the statistical properties of the UV variability, including the structure function on timescales of days and years. We report classifications for the GALEX TDS sample using a combination of optical host colors and morphology, UV light curve characteristics, and matches to archival X-ray, and spectroscopy catalogs. We classify 62% of the sources as active galaxies (358 quasars and 305 active galactic nuclei), and 10% as variable stars (including 37 RR Lyrae, 53 M dwarf flare stars, and 2 cataclysmic variables). We detect a large-amplitude tail in the UV variability distribution for M-dwarf flare stars and RR Lyrae, reaching up to |{Delta}m|=4.6mag and 2.9mag, respectively. The mean amplitude of the structure function for quasars on year timescales is five times larger than observed at optical wavelengths. The remaining unclassified sources include UV-bright extragalactic transients, two of which have been spectroscopically confirmed to be a young core-collapse supernova and a flare from the tidal disruption of a star by dormant supermassive black hole. We calculate a surface density for variable sources in the UV with NUV<23mag and |{Delta}m|>0.2mag of ~8.0, 7.7, and 1.8deg^-2^ for quasars, active galactic nuclei, and RR Lyrae stars, respectively. We also calculate a surface density rate in the UV for transient sources, using the effective survey time at the cadence appropriate to each class, of ~15 and 52deg^-2^/yr for M dwarfs and extragalactic transients, respectively.
