- We present a sample of Cepheid variable stars towards M31 based on the first year of regular M31 observations of the PS1 survey in the r_P1 and i_P1 filters. We describe the selection procedure for Cepheid variable stars from the overall variable source sample and develop an automatic classification scheme using Fourier decomposition and the location of the instability strip. We find 1440 fundamental mode (classical {delta}) Cep stars, 126 Cepheids in the first overtone mode, and 147 belonging to the Population II types. 296 Cepheids could not be assigned to one of these classes and 354 Cepheids were found in other surveys. These 2009 Cepheids constitute the largest Cepheid sample in M31 known so far and the full catalog is presented in this paper. We briefly describe the properties of our sample in its spatial distribution throughout the M31 galaxy, in its age properties, and we derive an apparent period-luminosity relation (PLR) in our two bands. The Population I Cepheids nicely follow the dust pattern of the M31 disk, whereas the 147 Type II Cepheids are distributed throughout the halo of M31. We outline the time evolution of the star formation in the major ring found previously and find an age gradient. A comparison of our PLR to previous results indicates a curvature term in the PLR.

- We present a group of 3740 previously identified RR Lyrae variables well observed with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We explore how the shape of the generic RR Lyrae mid-infrared light curve varies over period-space, comparing light curves in mid-infrared and optical bands. We find that optical light curves exhibit high amplitudes and a large spectrum of light-curve shapes, while mid-infrared light curves have low amplitudes and uniform light-curve shapes. From the period-space analysis, we hope to improve the classification methods of RR Lyrae variables and enable reliable discovery of these pulsators in the WISE catalogue and future mid-infrared surveys such as the James Webb Space Telescope. We provide mid-infrared templates for typical RR Lyrae stars and demonstrate how these templates can be applied to improve estimates of mid-infrared RR Lyrae mean magnitude, which is used for distance measurement. This method of template fitting is particularly beneficial for improving observational efficiency. For example, using light curves with observational noise of 0.05mag, we obtain the same level of accuracy in mean magnitude estimates for light curves randomly sampled at 12 data points with template fitting as with light curves randomly sampled at 20 data points with harmonic modelling.

- In the third paper of this series we continue the exploitation of Kepler/K2 data in dense stellar fields using our PSF-based method. This work is focused on a ~720-arcmin^2^ region centred on the Solar-metallicity and Solar-age open cluster M 67. We extracted light curves for all detectable sources in the Kepler channels 13 and 14, adopting our technique based on the usage of a high-angular-resolution input catalogue and target-neighbour subtraction. We detrended light curves for systematic errors, and searched for variables and exoplanets using several tools. We found 451 variables, of which 299 are new detection. Three planetary candidates were detected by our pipeline in this field. Raw and detrended light curves, catalogues, and K2 stacked images used in this work will be released to the community.

- Using the M31 PAndromeda Cepheid sample and the HST PHAT data we obtain the largest Cepheid sample in M31 with HST data in four bands. For our analysis we consider three samples: A very homogeneous sample of Cepheids based on the PAndromeda data, the mean magnitude corrected PAndromeda sample and a sample complementing the PAndromeda sample with Cepheids from literature. The latter results in the largest catalog with 522 fundamental mode (FM) Cepheids and 102 first overtone (FO) Cepheids with F160W and F110W data and 559 FM Cepheids and 111 FO Cepheids with F814W and F475W data. The obtained dispersion of the Period-Luminosity relations (PLRs) is very small (e.g. 0.138mag in the F160W sample I PLR). We find no broken slope in the PLRs when analyzing our entire sample, but we do identify a subsample of Cepheids that causes the broken slope. However, this effect only shows when the number of this Cepheid type makes up a significant fraction of the total sample. We also analyze the sample selection effect on the Hubble constant.

- V725 Sgr is a rather peculiar variable that showed a period increase during part of the twentieth century. Its behavior is attributed to rapid stellar evolution. V725 Sgr was monitored in V, R, I and J, H, K with the REM telescope, on La Silla, from 2008 August to 2009 November. Its light variation does not show a well-defined cyclic behavior. Its current V is similar to what it was 30-40yrs ago. Its published motion suggests that V725 Sgr is located at a few kiloparsecs from the Sun. This implies that V725 Sgr is a giant rather than a supergiant star. From its mean colors we conclude that V725 Sgr is now an irregular variable of spectral type ~K4 III.

- Ongoing and future surveys with repeat imaging in multiple bands are producing (or will produce) time-spaced measurements of brightness, resulting in the identification of large numbers of variable sources in the sky. A large fraction of these are periodic variables: compilations of these are of scientific interest for a variety of purposes. Unavoidably, the data sets from many such surveys not only have sparse sampling, but also have embedded frequencies in the observing cadence that beat against the natural periodicities of any object under investigation. Such limitations can make period determination ambiguous and uncertain. For multiband data sets with asynchronous measurements in multiple passbands, we wish to maximally use the information on periodicity in a manner that is agnostic of differences in the light-curve shapes across the different channels. Given large volumes of data, computational efficiency is also at a premium. This paper develops and presents a computationally economic method for determining periodicity that combines the results from two different classes of period-determination algorithms. The underlying principles are illustrated through examples. The effectiveness of this approach for combining asynchronously sampled measurements in multiple observables that share an underlying fundamental frequency is also demonstrated.

- The study of extended, cold dust envelopes surrounding R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars began with their discovery by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite. RCB stars are carbon-rich supergiants characterized by their extreme hydrogen deficiency and their irregular and spectacular declines in brightness (up to 9 mag). We have analyzed new and archival Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory data of the envelopes of seven RCB stars to examine the morphology and investigate the origin of these dusty shells. Herschel, in particular, has revealed the first-ever bow shock associated with an RCB star with its observations of SU Tauri. These data have allowed the assembly of the most comprehensive spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these stars with multiwavelength data from the ultraviolet to the submillimeter. Radiative transfer modeling of the SEDs implies that the RCB stars in this sample are surrounded by an inner warm (up to 1200 K) and an outer cold (up to 200 K) envelope. The outer shells are suggested to contain up to 10^-3^ M_{sun}_ of dust and have existed for up to 10^5^ years depending on the expansion rate of the dust. This age limit indicates that these structures have most likely been formed during the RCB phase.

- We have obtained the most extensive and most accurate photometric data of a Blazhko variable MW Lyrae (MW Lyr) during the 2006-2007 observing seasons. The data within each 0.05 phase bin of the modulation period (P_m_=1/f_m_) cover the entire light cycle of the primary pulsation period (P_0_=1/f_0_) , making possible a very rigorous and complete analysis.

- The DIRECT Project aims to obtain direct distances to two Local Group galaxies, M31 and M33, which occupy a crucial position near the base of the cosmological distance ladder. The first step is to search for detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids using 1m class telescopes to select good candidates, which will be followed up spectroscopically on 6.510m class telescopes. In this ninth paper, we present a catalog of variable stars discovered with image subtraction in field M31Y (RA=10.97{deg}, DE=41.69{deg}; J2000.0). The data were obtained with the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope on 25 nights, over a period of 6 months. In our search covering 22x22, we discovered 41 eclipsing binaries, 126 Cepheids, and 97 other periodic or nonperiodic variables, including a luminous blue variable candidate, a nova, and a Galactic cataclysmic variable. - We present a comprehensive re-analysis of stellar photometric variability in the field of the open cluster M37 following the application of a new photometry and de-trending method to the MMT/Megacam image archive. This new analysis allows a rare opportunity to explore photometric variability over a broad range of timescales, from minutes to a month. The intent of this work is to examine the entire sample of more than 30000 objects for periodic, aperiodic, and sporadic behaviors in their light curves. We show a modified version of the fast {chi}^2^ periodogram algorithm (F{chi}^2^) and change-point analysis as tools for detecting and assessing the significance of periodic and non-periodic variations. The benefits of our new photometry and analysis methods are evident. A total of 2306 stars exhibit convincing variations that are induced by flares, pulsations, eclipses, starspots, and unknown causes in some cases. This represents a 60% increase in the number of variables known in this field. Moreover, 30 of the previously identified variables are found to be false positives resulting from time-dependent systematic effects. The new catalog includes 61 eclipsing binary systems, 92 multiperiodic variable stars, 132 aperiodic variables, and 436 flare stars, as well as several hundreds of rotating variables. Based on extended and improved catalog of variables, we investigate the basic properties (e.g., period, amplitude, type) of all variables.
