- Subaru/SuprimeCam narrow-band photometry of the SSA22 field reveals the presence of four Lyman continuum (LyC) candidates among a sample of 14 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Two show offsets and likely have stellar LyCin nature or are foreground contaminants. The remaining two LyC candidates are type I AGN. We argue that the average LyC escape fraction of high-redshift, low-luminosity AGN is not likely to be unity, as often assumed in the literature. From direct measurement we obtain the average LyC-to-UV flux density ratio and ionizing emissivity for a number of AGN classes and find it at least a factor of 2 lower than values obtained assuming f_esc_=1. Comparing to recent Ly{alpha} forest measurements, AGNs at redshift z~3 make up at most ~12 per cent and as little as ~5 per cent of the total ionizing budget. Our results suggest that AGNs are unlikely to dominate the ionization budget of the Universe at high redshifts.

- We present a new sample of 4634 eclipsing binary stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), expanding on a previous sample of 611 objects and a new sample of 1509 eclipsing binary stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), that were identified in the light-curve database of the MACHO project. We perform a cross-correlation with the OGLE-II LMC sample, finding 1236 matches. A cross correlation with the OGLE-II SMC sample finds 698 matches. We then compare the LMC subsamples corresponding to the center and periphery of the LMC and find only minor differences between the two populations. These samples are sufficiently large and complete that statistical studies of the binary star populations are possible.

- We have undertaken a long-term project, DIRECT, to obtain the direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder, M31 and M33, using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. While rare and difficult to detect, DEBs provide us with the potential to determine these distances with an accuracy better than 5%. The extensive photometry obtained in order to detect DEBs provides us with good light curves for the Cepheid variables. These are essential to the parallel project to derive direct Baade-Wesselink distances to Cepheids in M31 and M33. For both Cepheids and eclipsing binaries, the distance estimates will be free of any intermediate steps. As a first step in the DIRECT project, between 1996 September and 1997 January we obtained 36 full nights on the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory 1.3m telescope and 45 full/partial nights on the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.2m telescope to search for DEBs and new Cepheids in the M31 and M33 galaxies. In this paper, second in a series, we present the catalog of variable stars, most of them newly detected, found in the field M31A [({alpha},{delta})=(11.34{deg}, 41.73{deg}), J2000.0]. We have found 75 variable stars: 15 eclipsing binaries, 43 Cepheids, and 17 other periodic, possible long-period or nonperiodic variables. The catalog of variables, as well as their photometry and finding charts, is available via anonymous ftp and the World Wide Web. The CCD frames are available upon request.

Internal and external astrometric and photometric tests using existing optical photometry (U, B, and V from Massey's bright star catalog (Cat. <II/236>) and I from the near-infrared sky survey DENIS) are used to confirm our observational uncertainty estimates. We fit stellar atmosphere models to the optical data to check the consistency of the photometry for individual stars across the passbands and to estimate the line-of-sight extinction. Finally, we use the estimated line-of-sight extinctions to produce an extinction map across the Large Magellanic Cloud, confirm the variation of extinction as a function of stellar population, and produce a simple geometric model for the extinction as a function of stellar population.

- We present results from spectroscopic observations with the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System (M2FS) of 147 stellar targets along the line of sight to the newly discovered "ultrafaint" stellar systems Tucana 2 (Tuc 2) and Grus 1 (Gru 1). Based on simultaneous estimates of line of sight velocity and stellar-atmospheric parameters, we identify 8 and 7 stars as probable members of Tuc 2 and and Gru 1, respectively. Our sample for Tuc 2 is sufficient to resolve an internal velocity dispersion of 8.6^+4.4^_-2.7_km/s about a mean of -129.1+/-3.5km/s (solar rest frame), and to estimate a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-2.23^+0.18^_-0.12_. These results place Tuc 2 on chemodynamical scaling relations followed by dwarf galaxies, suggesting a dominant dark matter component with dynamical mass 2.7^+3.1^_-1.3_x10^6^M_{sun}_ enclosed within the central ~160pc, and dynamical mass-to-light ratio 1913^+2234^_-950_M_{sun}_/L_{nu},{sun}_. For Gru 1 we estimate a mean velocity of -140.5^+2.4^_-1.6_km/s and a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.42^+0.55^_-0.42_ but our sample does not resolve Gru 1's velocity dispersion. The radial coordinates of Tuc 2 and Gru 1 in Galactic phase space suggest that their orbits are among the most energetic within a distance of <~300pc. Moreover, their proximity to each other in this space arises naturally if both objects are trailing the Large Magellanic Cloud.

- We present Magellan/IMACS, Anglo-Australian Telescope/AAOmega+2dF, and Very Large Telescope/GIRAFFE+FLAMES spectroscopy of the Carina II (CarII) and Carina III (CarIII) dwarf galaxy candidates, recently discovered in the Magellanic Satellites Survey (MagLiteS). We identify 18 member stars in Car II, including two binaries with variable radial velocities and two RR Lyrae stars. The other 14 members have a mean heliocentric velocity v_hel_=477.2+/-1.2km/s and a velocity dispersion of {sigma}_v_=3.4_-0.8_^+1.2^km/s. Assuming Car II is in dynamical equilibrium, we derive a total mass within the half-light radius of 1.0_-0.4_^+0.8^x10^6^M_{sun}_, indicating a mass-to-light ratio of 369_-161_^+309^M_{sun}_/L_{sun}_. From equivalent width measurements of the calcium triplet lines of nine red giant branch (RGB) stars, we derive a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-2.44+/-0.09 with dispersion {sigma}_[Fe/H]_=0.22_-0.07_^+0.10^. Considering both the kinematic and chemical properties, we conclude that CarII is a dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy. For CarIII, we identify four member stars, from which we calculate a systemic velocity of v_hel_=284.6_-3.1_^+3.4^km/s. The brightest RGB member of CarIII has a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.97+/-0.12. Due to the small size of the Car III spectroscopic sample, we cannot conclusively determine its nature. Although these two systems have the smallest known physical separation ({Delta}d~10kpc) among Local Group satellites, the large difference in their systemic velocities, ~200km/s, indicates that they are unlikely to be a bound pair. One or both systems are likely associated with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and may remain LMC satellites today. No statistically significant excess of {gamma}-ray emission is found at the locations of Car II and Car III in eight years of Fermi-LAT data.

- We aim to study the rotational properties of the dwarf planet Makemake. The photometric observations were carried out at different telescopes between 2006 and 2017. Most of the measurements were acquired in BVRI broad-band filters of a standard Johnson-Cousins photometric system. We found that Makemake rotates more slowly than was previously reported. A possible lightcurve asymmetry suggests a double-peaked period of P=22.8266+/-0.0001h. A small peak-to-peak lightcurve amplitude in R-filter A=0.032+/-0.005mag implies an almost spherical shape or near pole-on orientation. We also measured BVRI colours and the R-filter phase-angle slope and revised the absolute magnitudes. The absolute magnitude of Makemake remained unchanged since its discovery in 2005. No direct evidence of a newly discovered satellite was found in our photometric data, however we discuss the possible existence of another larger satellite.

- We report on-off pointed MAMBO observations at 1.2mm of 61 Spitzer-selected star-forming galaxies from the Spitzer Wide Area Infrared Extragalactic Legacy survey (SWIRE). The sources are selected on the basis of bright 24um fluxes (F24um>0.4mJy) and of stellar dominated near-infrared spectral energy distributions in order to favor z~2 starburst galaxies. The average 1.2mm flux for the whole sample is 1.5+/-0.2mJy. Our analysis focuses on 29 sources in the Lockman Hole field where the average 1.2mm flux (1.9+/-0.3mJy) is higher than in other fields (1.1+/-0.2mJy). The analysis of the multiwavelength spectral energy distributions indicates that these sources are starburst galaxies with far-infrared luminosities from 10^12^ to 10^13.3^L_{sun}_, and stellar masses of ~0.2-6x10^11^M_{sun}_. Compared to submillimeter selected galaxies (SMGs), the SWIRE-MAMBO sources are among those with the largest 24um/1.2mm flux ratios. The origin of such large ratios is investigated by comparing the average mid-infrared spectra and the stacked far-infrared spectral energy distributions of the SWIRE-MAMBO sources and of SMGs.
