- We propose the first association of an optical counterpart with a luminous supersoft X-ray source in M31, RX J0044.0+4118, observed with ROSAT in July 1991. The PSPC position is at 1.644 angular distance from a candidate nova in outburst in September of 1990. This is interesting because the incidence of classical novae among supersoft X-ray sources is an open question. The proposed optical counterpart was measured at R~=17.7 in September of 1990, and it had faded to R>19.2 when it was observed again after 70 days. The light curve was too sparsely monitored for definite conclusions on the speed class of the nova. No other variable objects with V<23.5 were found in the ROSAT spatial error box. We evaluate that the probability that a classical or recurrent nova was in outburst in the ROSAT error box in the few years preceding the observation is very small, so the proposed identification is meaningful. We also show evidence that the associated supersoft X-ray source turned off in the third year after the outburst.

- We present ground-based and Swift photometric and spectroscopic observations of the candidate tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-14li, found at the centre of PGC 043234 (d~90 Mpc) by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). The source had a peak bolometric luminosity of L~10^44^ erg/s and a total integrated energy of E~7x10^50^ erg radiated over the ~6 months of observations presented. The UV/optical emission of the source is well fitted by a blackbody with roughly constant temperature of T~35000 K, while the luminosity declines by roughly a factor of 16 over this time. The optical/UV luminosity decline is broadly consistent with an exponential decline, L{prop.to}e^-t/t0^, with t_0_~60 d. ASASSN-14li also exhibits soft X-ray emission comparable in luminosity to the optical and UV emission but declining at a slower rate, and the X-ray emission now dominates. Spectra of the source show broad Balmer and helium lines in emission as well as strong blue continuum emission at all epochs. We use the discoveries of ASASSN-14li and ASASSN-14ae to estimate the TDE rate implied by ASAS-SN, finding an average rate of r~4.1x10^-5^/yr per galaxy with a 90 per cent confidence interval of (2.2-17.0)x10^-5^/yr per galaxy. ASAS-SN found roughly 1 TDE for every 70 Type Ia supernovae in 2014, a rate that is much higher than that of other surveys.

- We report the discovery of 1RXS J173006.4+033813, a polar cataclysmic variable with a period of 120.21 minutes. The white dwarf primary has a magnetic field of B=42^+6^_-5_MG and the secondary is an M3 dwarf. The system shows highly symmetric double-peaked photometric modulation in the active state as well as in quiescence. These arise from a combination of cyclotron beaming and ellipsoidal modulation. The projected orbital velocity of the secondary is K_2_=390+/-4km/s. We place an upper limit of 830+/-65pc on the distance.

- Circumstellar disks are expected to evolve quickly in massive young clusters harboring many OB-type stars. Two processes have been proposed to drive the disk evolution in such cruel environments: (1) gravitational interaction between circumstellar disks and nearby passing stars (stellar encounters), and (2) photoevaporation by UV photons from massive stars. The relative importance of both mechanisms is not well understood. Studies of massive young star clusters can provide observational constraints on the processes of driving disk evolution. We investigate the properties of young stars and their disks in the NGC 6357 complex, concentrating on the most massive star cluster within the complex: Pismis 24.

- PKS 0558-504 is a highly-variable, X-ray-bright, radio-loud, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy with super-Eddington accretion rate and extended jets that do not dominate the emission beyond the radio band. Therefore, this source represents an ideal laboratory to shed some light on the central engine in highly accreting systems and specifically on the link between accretion disc and corona. Here we present the results from a 1.5-year monitoring with Swift-XRT and Swift-UVOT. The simultaneous coverage at several wavelengths confirms that PKS 0558-504 is highly variable in any band from the optical to ultraviolet (UV) and X-rays, with the latter showing the largest amplitude changes but with the UV emission dominating the radiative output. A cross-correlation analysis reveals a tight link between the emission in the optical and UV bands and provides suggestive evidence in favour of a scenario where the variability originates in the outer part of the accretion flow and propagates inwards before triggering the activity of the X-ray-emitting corona. Finally, a positive correlation between the soft-X-ray flux and the hard photon index suggests that in PKS 0558-504 the seed photons are provided to the corona by the soft-excess component.

- We present simultaneous Planck, Swift, Fermi, and ground-based data for 105 blazars belonging to three samples with flux limits in the soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and {gamma}-ray bands, with additional 5GHz flux-density limits to ensure a good probability of a Planck detection. We compare our results to those of a companion paper presenting simultaneous Planck and multi-frequency observations of 104 radio-loud northern active galactic nuclei selected at radio frequencies. While we confirm several previous results, our unique data set allows us to demonstrate that the selection method strongly influences the results, producing biases that cannot be ignored.

- We present radio observations of the galaxy cluster PLCK G004.5-19.5 (z=0.52) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 150MHz, 325MHz, and 610MHz. We find an unusual arrangement of diffuse radio emission in the center and periphery of the cluster, as well as several radio galaxies with head-tail emission. A patch of peripheral emission resembles a radio relic, and central emission resembles a radio halo. Reanalysis of archival XMM-Newton X-ray data shows that PLCK G004.5-19.5 is disturbed, which has a known correlation with the existence of radio relics and halos. Given that the number of known radio halos and radio relics at z>0.5 is very limited, PLCK G004.5-19.5 is an important addition to understanding merger-related particle acceleration at higher redshifts.

- We present more than three years of observations at different frequencies, from radio to high-energy gamma-rays, of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.585). This source is the first NLS1 detected at energies above 100 MeV and therefore can be considered the prototype of this emerging new class of gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGN). The observations performed from 2008 August 1 to 2011 December 31 confirmed that PMN J0948+0022 generates a powerful relativistic jet, able to develop an isotropic luminosity at gamma-rays of the order of 10^48^erg/s, at the level of powerful quasars. The evolution of the radiation emission of this source in 2009 and 2010 followed the canonical expectations of relativistic jets, with correlated multiwavelength variability (gamma-rays followed by radio emission after a few months), but it was difficult to retrieve a similar pattern in the light curves of 2011. The comparison of gamma-ray spectra before and including 2011 data suggested that there was a softening of the high-energy spectral slope. We selected five specific epochs to be studied by modelling the broad-band spectrum, characterised by an outburst at gamma-rays or very low/high flux at other wavelengths. The observed variability can largely be explained either by changes in the injected power, the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet or the electron spectrum. The characteristic time scale of doubling/halving flux ranges from a few days to a few months, depending on the frequency and the sampling rate. The shortest doubling time scale at gamma-rays is 2.3+/-0.5days. These small values underline the need of highly-sampled multiwavelength campaigns to better understand the physics of these sources.

- Several studies showed that the magnetic activity of late-type main-sequence (MS) stars is characterized by different regimes and that their activity levels are well described by the Ross by number, Ro, defined as the ratio between the rotational period P_rot_ and the convective turnover time. Very young pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars show, similarly to MS stars, intense magnetic activity. However, they do not show clear activity-rotation trends, and it still debated which stellar parameters determine their magnetic activity levels. To bridge the gap between MS and PMS stars, we studied the activity-rotation relation in the young cluster h Persei, a ~13Myr old cluster, that contains both fast and slow rotators. The cluster members have ended their accretion phase and have developed a radiative core. It therefore offers us the opportunity of studying the activity level of intermediate-age PMS stars with different rotational velocities, excluding any interactions with the circumstellar environment We constrained the magnetic activity levels of h Per members by measuring their X-ray emission from a Chandra observation, while rotational periods were obtained previously in the framework of the MONITOR project. By cross-correlating these data, we collected a final catalog of 414 h Per members with known rotational period, effective temperature, and mass. In 169 of these, X-ray emission has also been detected.

- We describe the first complete polarimetric dataset of the entire outburst of a low-mass black hole X-ray binary system and discuss the constraints for geometry and radiative mechanisms it imposes. During the decaying hard state, when the optical flux is dominated by the non-thermal component, the observed polarization is consistent with the interstellar values in all filters. During the soft state, the intrinsic polarization of the source is small, ~0.15 per cent in B and V filters, and is likely produced in the irradiated disc. A much higher polarization, reaching ~0.5 per cent in V and R filters, at position angle of ~25{deg} observed in the rising hard state coincides in time with the detection of winds in the system. This angle coincides with the position angle of the jet. The detected optical polarization is best explained by scattering of the non-thermal (hot flow or jet base) radiation in an equatorial wind.
